Wiley Award Address: Optimised Scoring in Proficiency Tests
The AOAC International Wiley Award was given to Professor Michael Thompson this year. He gave the presentation at the AOAC Annual International meeting.
His presentation was followed by the Wiley Award Symposium in which there were short addresses by speakers concerned with proficiency testing from the point of view of the provider, accreditation agency, consultant, major manufacturer buying in analytical services and the consultant laboratory.
This was followed by an extensive round-table where issues such as the change in role of proficiency testing from being a mechanism to help analytical laboratories to becoming a pseudo qualification in its own right were discussed.

Method validation is recognised as an essential part of good measurement practice. It cannot be guaranteed that analytical data will be fit-for-purpose unless the performance of the test method has been studied and demonstrated to be adequate. Quality standards such as ISO/IEC 17025, ‘General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories’, place considerable emphasis on the validation of test methods. Laboratories often spend a substantial amount of time and effort on method validation but it is not always a straightforward activity. The seminar discussed a range of topics relating to the assessment of the performance of chemical methods, in particular addressing issues that can cause problems during method validation.
The seminar was organised by LGC and Eurachem-UK with support from the Department of Trade and Industry as part of the National Measurement System Valid Analytical Measurement (VAM) programme. Eurachem-UK is a sub-committee of the AMC and is the UK branch of Eurachem, which provides a focus for analytical chemistry and quality related issues in Europe.
