Purpose and scope

The Water Science Forum (WSF) is one of the Royal Society of Chemistry's many Interest Groups. The Interest Groups are member driven groups which exist to benefit RSC members, and the wider chemical science community, in line with the RSC's strategy and charter.

Membership of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) provides access to a wide range of benefits and services which assist in career development plus offering professional and everyday financial savings. The Water Science Forum (WSF) is one of the most active of the RSC’s special interest groups. It focuses on the application of the chemical sciences to management of the water cycle and the impact of these activities on the natural environment. The WSF supports methods which promote efficient use of water resources including techniques for recycling/reuse and resource recovery. It has a diverse membership drawn from the water industry, consultancies, academia and regulatory bodies among others.

The WSF focuses on the application of chemical sciences in the management of the water cycle and the impact of these activities on the natural environment. WSF attracts members, and thus expertise, from many sectors within the water community.

Aims

  • To promote the professional and scientific interests of members and to advise on and influence, in the public interest, the application of chemistry in water-related industries. The WSF also aims to promote research, education and specialised training in all aspects of water-related chemistry, including relevant chartered status for members.
  • To keep members up-to-date with current developments within the water sector and to promote Continuous Professional Development.
  • To provide a forum for the debate of professional and scientific matters on water-related issues within the RSC and other relevant organisations.
  • To provide specialist technical advice on water-related issues to the RSC and to assist the RSC in presenting a corporate view to national and local government on matter of interest to WSF members.
  • To promote research, education and specialised training in all aspects of water-related chemistry, including relevant chartered status for members.

Water for Life

The Water Science Forum has adopted WaterAid as its preferred charity.

WaterAid is a charity that works with some of the poorest communities in Africa and Asia providing a better quality of life through water, sanitation and hygiene education projects.

Many women and children in developing countries spend hours each day walking kilometres to collect water. This water is often dirty but they have no alternative. Carrying heavy water containers is an exhausting task, taking valuable time and energy. It prevents women from doing vital domestic or income generating work and stops children from going to school.

WaterAid believes that water, sanitation and hygiene education provide the key to poverty reduction. By focusing on projects that combine these three elements, health benefits are maximised and the results are long lasting and wide reaching.

WaterAid works with local partners to help some of the poorest communities in Africa and Asia plan, manage and maintain their own safe water supplies, sanitation facilities and promotes good hygiene practices. With these benefits communities are in a better position to work themselves out of poverty.

Through raising funds and awareness in the UK, WaterAid works closely with many different groups such as schools, churches and service groups and associates. WaterAid also receives a great deal of support from members of the public who give regular donations through direct debit. As little as £2 a month can give a person safe water, sanitation and hygiene education.

Committee

The committee members listed are responsible for designing programmes that will advance chemistry in the subject area, helping the RSC to meet its aims, engaging with and supporting our members.

We are always keen to welcome new members to the committee. When vacancies arise, we circulate a “Call for Committee”, where an email is sent to all members of the group to make them aware of new opportunities to join the committee.

It is important to have diverse representation on committees to consider the needs of our membership. All RSC members are welcome to stand for committee positions when vacancies are advertised.

Water Science Forum Bursaries

The Royal Society of Chemistry Water Science Forum offers a limited number of bursaries each year to post graduate students or professional water scientists to help support their early career development or when returning to scientific work after a break.

The Alan Tetlow Memorial Bursary

The Alan Tetlow Memorial Bursary aims to help encourage early career chemists (during the first 10 years of their career) and those returning to work after a career break to develop their professional career. Awards of up to £2,000 per year are available.

John Alan Tetlow, who died, aged 70, in February 2005, was one of the founder members of the RSC Water Chemistry Forum (now the Water Science Forum). Alan retired as a Regional Manager in the then National Rivers Authority and devoted many years of his life to improving the quality of the water environment in England and Wales. Most importantly he helped to raise the profile of the water chemist within both the RSC and the water industry. The Alan Tetlow Memorial Bursary commemorates Alan’s work and the importance of water chemistry.

Members can apply for financial assistance to advance their career in relation to the following activities, to:

  • Attend conferences for the purpose of presenting a poster or paper
  • Attend research meetings (including young researcher meetings)
  • Visit UK or international laboratories
  • Complete training courses; and
  • Assist in research relating to water science projects in general

Please note that activities are not restricted to those above only. However, the activity needs to contain a high proportion of water related chemical science which contributes to water sustainability (environment, economic, social) and have an identifiable practical application. In order to provide maximum benefit to as many members as possible, the bursary is restricted to one successful application per member. Applicants must be members of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and also should be members of the Water Science Forum.

The value of each bursary will be not more than 50% of the agreed cost and will be awarded subject to satisfactory receipts. Please note 25% of any award will be withheld pending satisfactory completion of a report or article for the Newsletter and/or presentation to a Committee Meeting. All requests for financial support are considered on their merits. Therefore, it is vital that the application form contains sufficient detail for the Committee to make an informed assessment on the degree of water related chemical science involved. The applicant also needs to identify how their project is likely to further the Water Science Forum’s aims and objectives. The committee's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

The Water Science Bursary

This bursary is to support Royal Society of Chemistry members undertaking water science research at an early stage of their career. In particular, applications are encouraged from members aiming to achieve Registered Science Technician (RSciTech) or Registered Scientist (RSci) status.

The Water Science Bursary is awarded to researchers engaged in projects that involve application of chemical sciences in the management of the water cycle, and the impact these activities have on the environment. Awards of up to £2,000 per year are available in relation to the following activities:

  • Continuing professional development research analysis activities for RSciTech or RSci awards
  • MSc thesis projects
  • Short sabbatical periods to complete relevant research
  • Assistance in Water Science research projects

Please note that activities are not restricted to the examples above, so please feel able to submit an application for an alternative activity for consideration. Please note though, that any activity needs to contain a high proportion of water related chemical science which contributes to water sustainability (environment, economic, social) and have an identifiable practical application.

Applicants must be members of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and also should be members of the Water Science Forum.

MSc students, or students on other career development routes, including those who have no formal higher qualifications (e.g. degree or HND), and those wishing to obtain RSciTech or RSci qualifications, are particularly encouraged to apply.

All requests for financial support are considered on their merits. Therefore, it is vital that the application form contains sufficient detail for the Bursaries Assessment Committee to make an informed assessment. Please note 25% of any award will be withheld pending satisfactory completion of a report or article for the Newsletter and/or presentation to a Committee Meeting. The applicant also needs to clearly identify how their work is likely to further the Water Science Forum’s aims and objectives. The committee's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

How to apply

Applications should be made in the period 1 January to 31 March on the appropriate form and submitted to the Honorary Secretary of Water Science Forum either electronically or care of Burlington House.  Each application is then reviewed by the Water Science Forum Committee Bursaries Sub-Group, no later than 30 April. The Hon. Secretary will notify applicants of the outcome of their applications in the first week of May.

Successful applicants should note that any payments made in advance will go to the organising body, and not to the individual.  As a condition of the bursary successful applicants are required to submit a completed appraisal assessment form to provide feedback to the Committee on the benefits obtained from the bursary. The Committee may accept an alternative presentation if the costs of attending the meeting are prohibitive.
