Neutron Scattering Group

Connect with colleagues in your field and become involved in your scientific community

Purpose and scope

The Neutron Scattering Group is one of the RSC's many Interest Groups and is joint with the Institute of Physics (IoP). The Interest Groups are member driven groups which exist to benefit RSC members, and the wider chemical science community, in line with the RSC's strategy and charter.

Aims

The Neutron Scattering Group is a group jointly hosted by Institute of Physics (IOP) and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) to promote neutron science actively with its user community.

Our aims are to:
Organise events to develop neutron user links and discuss results from neutron experiments
Provide links to and from UK-funded neutron sources and the European Neutron Scattering Association
Represent neutron scattering and its users within the IOP and RSC learned societies
Support actively early career researchers to engage with neutron scattering

Our mission is to support and develop the UK neutron community in a rapidly changing global neutron landscape, and to represent UK neutron scattering externally. Additionally, we award the BTM Willis Prize, Don McKenzie Paul Thesis Prize and the Thomas-Penfold Poster Prize annually. Examples of activities include organising and contributing to conferences and schools involving neutron scattering research, e.g. the Faraday Joint Interest Group Conferences in 2017, 2021 and 2023, the biennial Oxford School on Neutron Scattering and early career researcher meetings in 2020, 2022 and 2025

Benefits of joining this group

  • Advance notice of relevant events, meetings and conferences and courses
  • Reduced registration fees for meetings
  • Networking opportunities
  • General info of various topics associated with the interest group and related RSC Subject Communities
  • Keeps members up-to-date with current developments within the sector and promotes Continuous Professional Development

How to join

RSC members can join this interest group by updating their details in the “Manage my interest groups” section of the online RSC membership area.

Activities

To disseminate information about the neutron facilities available to as wide an audience as possible, particularly to newer entrants to the field and to those who work in related areas but who may occasionally wish to utilise neutron scattering techniques.

  • To organise informal one, two or three-day meetings/conferences covering various aspects of neutron scattering. These may range from the more fundamental aspects of condensed matter research to applied neutron scattering with increased participation from industrial concerns.
  • To host a regular introductory summer school to cover basic theory and recently developed techniques.
  • To collaborate with other groups and societies in connection with more general conferences allowing the comparison of neutron scattering methods with other techniques.

The group issues e-alerts which provides links to group events and other relevant information which may be of interest to you

Committee

The committee members listed are responsible for designing programmes that will advance chemistry in the subject area, helping the RSC to meet its aims, engaging with and supporting our members.

We are always keen to welcome new members to the committee. When vacancies arise, we circulate a “Call for Committee”, where an email is sent to all members of the group to make them aware of new opportunities to join the committee.

It is important to have diverse representation on committees to consider the needs of our membership. All RSC members are welcome to stand for committee positions when vacancies are advertised.
